The build for the project could be physical, like building a rain barrel or a native flower garden at your school. The build could also be intellectual in nature, such as a campaign to raise awareness about an issue. Whatever you choose, the build should improve your students’ place (home, school, community, etc.) in some way. The following is a list of possible ideas that may be a launch pad to get you started.
Electronic notes campaign at school | Create reusable grocery bags | Water bottle campaign |
Build a recycling center | Build a compost bin | Start a vegetable garden |
Energy saving posters or reminders to turn off lights in the school, etc. | Waste-limiting ideas for school cafeteria | Start a donation station for Goodwill at your school |
Green-campaign to inform buyers how to buy green | Reusable straw campaign | Upcycle builds – any building project in which materials are repurposed |
Green businesses promotion campaign | Carpool promotion for getting to/from school | Build and install Rain Barrels or Rain Tanks |
Build a rain garden | Build a home for a local organism | Create a butterfly garden |
Build a bird sanctuary | Tree planting project | Build a bird or critter feeder |
Build bird houses | Conduct audits of local biodiversity | Raise money for an environmentally focused field trip |
Build a chicken coop | Start a bee hive | Host a waste-free lunch once per week |
Conduct an energy audit and suggest/implement improvements | Host a walk/bike to school day | Install blinds in classroom to minimize energy transfer |
Host a fundraiser for water refill stations to minimize bottle waste. | Test local creek water, create and install “no dumping” signs for water runoff | Partner with a local organization to take care of a piece of land |
Start a “return and earn” program to promote recycling at school | Start a litter rewards program to encourage keeping grounds clean | Host a garage sale to raise money for habitat restoration |
Anti-plastics campaign | Plant shade trees around school/playground | Promote solar energy/ campaign to families |
Install motion sensors to turn lights off in classrooms | Build an insect hotel | Build a flower meadow |
Convert roof of small building to a green roof | Build a greenhouse | Invasive species removal |
Optimize a current system to make it more efficient |
These are just ideas. Your students will probably have some great ideas as well! Also, your school or community may already have specific needs that would be perfect for this project.
